Scottsdale Off-Duty Officer Kills Man At Fashion Square

The Scottsdale officer was working security at Scottsdale Fashion Square when he confronted a possible shoplifter.

SCOTTSDALE, AZ – An off-duty Scottsdale police officer working as a security guard at Scottsdale Fashion Square shot and killed a man police say was a suspected shoplifter. The off-duty officer had responded to a call of a man acting suspiciously inside of a store.

The officer encountered the man outside the mall on the third floor of the Brown Parking Garage.

Police say that when the officer told the man to stop, the man turned and pointed a gun at the officer, who fired.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police have not released his name but say that he had an extensive criminal record dating back decades,

The mall remained open during the investigation.

The officer, a 12-year-veteran of the department, has been placed on administrative leave while the investigation takes place.
