🌱 Convenience Store Shooting + Murray Signs 5-Year Cardinals Contract

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Phoenix.

(Patch Media)

Morning, neighbors! It's me, Dominique-Noelle Rafael, your host of the Phoenix Daily — back in your inbox with everything you need to know about what's happening in town. Let's do it...

First, today's weather:

Record-tying temperatures. High: 116 Low: 92.

📢 I'm looking for business owners and marketers in Phoenix who want to build awareness, connect with customers and increase sales.

I have a limited number of sponsorships available to introduce our Phoenix Daily readers to local businesses they need to know about. If that's you, then I invite you to learn more and secure your spot now.

Here are the top three stories today in Phoenix:

  1. A security guard at a 27th Avenue and Indian School Road convenience store shot a man for unclear reasons. The Phoenix Police Department is currently labeling the incident as self-defense. The man has been hospitalized for non-life-threatening injuries. According to the department, the man will be arrested when he is able to leave the hospital. (Arizona's Family)
  2. Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray is sticking with the team for at least the next five years. The two-time Pro Bowler has reportedly agreed to a long-term contract with the Cardinals through the 2028 season for a guaranteed $160 million. With this contract, Murray has become the NFL's second-highest paid quarterback, earning an average of $46.1 million per year, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. The Cardinals announced the new contract Thursday. (Phoenix Patch)
  3. Around 500 members of the Phoenix area's homeless population reportedly died during the first half of 2022. According to data from the county medical examiner's office, around 10 percent of deaths in homeless individuals were due to homicide, while the majority of deaths involved drugs (when a cause was determined). County figures show the number of unsheltered people in Maricopa County has at least tripled since 2016. (The Guardian)
