Seven rules to build positive thinking habits
The power of positive thinking is often misunderstood. Thinking positive does mean that all negative thoughts go away. When you choose to think positively, you decide not to let the negative thoughts affect you in destructive ways. Learning to think positively takes practice, but the outcomes are worth your time and energy.
These are the seven steps to a life of positivity:
- See life as it is. Don’t make life worse than it is and don’t make it better. Accept life for what it is. Good things happen to bad people and bad things happen to good people… it’s ok.
- See life better than it is. This is where you begin to develop positive thoughts. After recognize life is what it is, begin to visualize how you want it to be. Your mind does not know the difference between physically doing something and visualizing something. So visualize exactly how you want it!
- Make life like you see it. Take charge of your world and make it meet your desires. Ask yourself what is preventing this from happening and what do you need to make it happen? Then, make it happen. Understand where you are, where you want to be, and make a plan to get there.
- Decide to focus on what is going well rather than what is going wrong. When you look at what you have rather than what you don’t have, you begin to see the world differently. Think of this as a mental diet that expunges negative thoughts. Can you go seven days with no stinking thinking?
- Decide to become curious rather than judgmental. Curiosity helps us see the good in the people around us. It helps us develop empathy, which stops judgment. It creates objectivity and lets us see both sides of the coin.
- Appreciate and give compliments. When we do this in any situation, positive thoughts grow exponentially. Give compliments and find things you can appreciate. Even the littlest things.
- Decide not to be perfect. Once you realize that you will fail, it becomes easier to accept that perfection is a unicorn. You have survived failure in the past and you will survive it again.
Being a positive thinker does not mean that all bad things in your life cease to exist. What it does mean is that you understand those things do not define your life. It is amazing what happens when you make these subtle changes. Life will keep getting better.
