The Arizona Department of Public Safety said troopers responded just after 11 p.m. to the Pima Freeway near Chaparral Road after a driver in a black Audi sedan was spotted traveling southbound in the northbound lanes.
The Audi collided with two other vehicles near milepost 46.
Six people were taken to a nearby hospital. One suffered critical injuries; the conditions of the other five were not immediately available, according to AZDPS.
Authorities shut down northbound Loop 101 for several hours while troopers investigated the scene.
