2 Dogs Killed After Fire Tears Through Scottsdale Home

SCOTTSDALE, AZ — Two dogs died and two Scottsdale firefighters were hospitalized with heat exhaustion after a house fire Sunday evening, according to the Scottsdale Fire Department.

Fire crews from Scottsdale, Tempe and Phoenix responded around 5:09 p.m. to the 7400 block of East Windsor Avenue, near Scottsdale and Thomas roads. When firefighters arrived, they found a single-story home engulfed in flames.

Firefighters entered the home while searching for anyone who might still be inside. They quickly confirmed that all of the home's occupants had made it out safely before crews arrived.

While battling the fire, firefighters found two dogs inside the home. Despite rescue efforts, both animals died. No civilian injuries were reported.

As the fire intensified, crews were forced to pull out of the home and fight the blaze from outside. Additional firefighters were called in, bringing the total response to 56 firefighters.

Crews eventually brought the fire under control and prevented it from spreading to neighboring homes.

Two Scottsdale firefighters were taken to the hospital for treatment of heat exhaustion and were listed in stable condition, according to the fire department.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Officials had not released information Sunday night about what sparked the fire or the extent of the damage.

Following the fire, the Scottsdale Fire Department reminded residents that working smoke alarms can save lives.

Officials recommend installing smoke alarms on every level of a home, inside each bedroom and outside sleeping areas, testing them monthly and replacing them every 10 years.

The department also encourages families to practice a home fire escape plan and remember: If a smoke alarm sounds, get out, stay out and call 911.
