Major Thomas Road Project Begins In Scottsdale: What Drivers Should Know

SCOTTSDALE, AZ — Drivers along Thomas Road should prepare for delays as a major $24.8 million reconstruction project gets underway this month.

Construction is scheduled to begin in early August along Thomas Road between 56th Street and 73rd Street, kicking off the first phase of a long-planned overhaul of one of Scottsdale's busiest corridors.

The initial work will focus on replacing and upgrading underground sewer infrastructure before crews begin rebuilding the roadway next summer.

According to the city, the project includes installing a new sewer line and rehabilitating or replacing existing manholes throughout the corridor.

While the road will remain open during construction, motorists should expect lane restrictions, reduced travel lanes and limited left turns through the work zone. City officials said access to homes and businesses will be maintained throughout the project.

Once complete, the nearly $25 million project will deliver a rebuilt roadway along with several safety and traffic improvements, including:

• A new right-turn lane at Thomas Road and 68th Street
• Upgraded traffic signals
• Drainage improvements
• ADA-accessible pedestrian ramps
• New pavement markings and lane striping

City officials said completing the underground utility work before reconstructing the roadway will help prevent future disruptions and avoid having to tear up newly paved streets for infrastructure repairs.

The larger road reconstruction phase is expected to begin next summer after the sewer work is complete. A detailed construction schedule has not yet been released, but the project marks the start of a major transformation for the Thomas Road corridor.
