Good Monday morning fellow Scottsdalians! Your Patch Scottsdale Daily has changed it up a bit — I am still providing the news and information you need and have come to expect. And now you are receiving it Monday through Friday each week. The Monday edition (that's today!) gets you caught up from the weekend and ready for the work week, and the Friday issue will include all you need to know about activities and events for your weekend. Your feedback is essential — I'd love to hear what you think of the change; please send your comments and questions to geoffc160@gmail.com. Welcome to Monday, let's get this day started. Here's everything worth knowing around town today.

First, today's weather:

Nice! Today will be sunny to partly cloudy with a high of 83, and a Low of 59. Enjoy!

Here are the top stories today in Scottsdale:

  1. A thirteen-year-old male student was stabbed by a 13-year-old female on Friday morning at Mohave Middle School in Scottsdale, according to reporting in the Arizona Daily Independent. The boy was hospitalized, but the injuries were said not to be life-threatening by several news sources. The district's communication to the entire SUSD parent community, published by the source noted above, alerts parents to the incident. It clearly stated, "We want to emphasize that the incident involved these two students only, and the general student body was not in danger." The letter offers resources for students who are upset by the incident, and it sites applicable law regarding weapons in schools. (Arizona Daily Independent)
  2. Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics or STEM programs are in place in schools nationwide. However, in Scottsdale Unified, an initiative to encourage girls to dive into STEM education, Sisters in STEM, began in 2018, according to reporting on AZ (3TV/CBS 5). Natalie Foster '23, of Saguaro High School and the math and science academy, is the Sisters in STEM initiative president. The report quotes Foster as she explains what surprises kids when they first dig in," I think the biggest response we've had from students is they didn't know STEM encompassed so many different fields. There are so many different things they can do with STEM; it is quite honestly something really fun." The event featured "25 different hands-on activities, robots, all kinds of fun things to do," according to one of three Math and Science Academy Coordinators, Susan Lindberg. (Arizona's Family)
  3. Raise a glass to clean Drinking Water. The grand opening of the new Thomas Groundwater Treatment Facility was celebrated Thursday of last week and the dedication took place Friday. According to posts on the City of Scottsdale Facebook page, the event brought former mayors, Mary Manross and Jim Lane, among other former employees who had been connected to the project, out for the event.
