Behind the Western: Award-Winning Director Maggie Greenwald Comes to Western Spirit Museum

Award-winning writer and director Maggie Greenwald will visit Western Spirit Museum: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West on Sunday, September 20, for a special Q&A and presentation about her acclaimed 1993 film, The Ballad of Little Jo. Beginning at 2 p.m., Greenwald will share insights into the making and lasting impact of the film before joining guests for a screening. Part of Western Spirit Museum’s 1990s: Still in the Saddle Film Series, the event explores a groundbreaking Western inspired by the true story of Josephine Monaghan, a young woman in the mid-19th century who disguises herself as a man named “Jo” to survive in the American frontier. In 2024, the film was named one of the Top 100 Westerns of All Time by IndieWire. Admission is free for Museum Members, included with paid museum admission, or $10 for program-only attendance.
