Here are the top stories in Scottsdale today:

  1. Meet the Crowthers, a father and his two sons who all proudly serve as firefighters with the Scottsdale Fire Department! Captain Bill Crowther is stationed north, but he happened to end up on a recent call to a Windsor Avenue home that put him under the command of his youngest son, Brandon, who was named 2022 Firefighter of the Year, and serves at a station near Old Town. He is currently preparing for the captain's test, and he was serving as the on-scene commander as part of his captain's training. Brandon also recruited his younger brother, Logan, to join the SFD in 2021. The Windsor Avenue fire was extinguished quickly and no one was injured. (Scottsdale Progress)
  2. Family Destinations Guide ranks Camelback Mountain as "America's fifth favorite mountain to climb!" The ranking was determined by Instagram data and Tripadvisor ratings and reviews. Though it may be a very popular hike, and "one of the most trafficked" mountains in Arizona, Camelback isn't necessarily an easy hike. In fact, the mountain "accounts for many, if not most, of hiker rescues due to the difficulty, the summer's heat, injuries, and lack of water." (FOX 10 News Phoenix)
  3. Pinnacle Brewing Company, a "new family-owned brewery," is opening at 15111 North Hayden Road in September! Bob and Mary Wilson are co-owners, and their son Wyatt "will serve as the company's brewmaster" with his extensive brewery-focused background and brewmaster education. Guests will be able to enjoy "a global variety of true-to-style craft brews in a chill indoor/outdoor tap room," complete with a full kitchen and a spacious patio! (NewsBreak)
  4. Scottsdale had a successful spring training season! Local hotels, restaurants and bars saw a boost in sales and activity with the termination of COVID protocols. The 2023 Cactus League preliminary attendance reports show an average of 7,273 fans attended per game this year, well over the 5,397 average in 2022 and triple the 2,149 average in 2021. Scottsdale Stadium was especially busy this season despite "unseasonably cold and wet weather," with an average fan attendance of 8,731 per game, compared to 6,687 in 2022 and 1,369 in 2021. (East Valley Tribune)
  5. The Athletic Club, a fitness studio owned by former Arizona Cardinals cheerleader Kaileigh van Horne, opened on Hayden and Indian Bend Road in December. The new club "offers bodyweight exercises with 50-minute workouts designed to increase strength and energy levels and boost mood." Classes are offered Monday through Saturday, and a "mama club" is offered on Friday mornings for postnatal and prenatal women. (Arcadia News)
