Here are the top stories today in Scottsdale:
- Our neighbors need our help to survive the summer heat! Consider participating in the "Fill-a-Cruiser" event this Thursday, May 18 from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Granite Reef Senior Center, 1700 N. Granite Reef Road. The goal of the event is to "fill a police cruiser with essential items needed for the Beat the Heat Program." The critical items for in-need, homebound seniors include water bottles, electrolyte or nutritional drinks, and hygiene items like large shampoo and conditioner bottles. You can find a full list of items needed here. (City of Scottsdale)
- Scottsdale City Manager Jim Thompson is bringing the controversial topic of "road diets" to today's city council meeting. The work study session is titled "Road Diet Portion of the City's Transportation Action Plan" and described as a "presentation, discussion and possible direction to staff regarding the 'road diet' portion of the city's Transportation Action Plan." In case you've been steering clear of "road diet" discussions, this refers to the city's plan to decrease vehicle lanes while adding bikes lanes and other "safety features" on certain portions of Scottsdale roads — a concept that city staff now refer to as "complete streets." The city council meeting takes place at 5 p.m. at Scottsdale City Hall, and the full agenda can be found here. (scottsdale.org)
- Dr. Daniel Gold, the Scottsdale dentist accused of multiple felonies, has "voluntarily surrendered his dental license" at the request of the Arizona Dental Board. Without the voluntary surrender, the board would have moved to suspend his license "with the intent to eventually revoke it." Gold cannot legally treat patients without his license, but he can reapply for licensing at any time. (Arizona's Family)
