Gilbert Custodian Arrested + Engine Braking + SUSD 125 Years

Welcome to the Scottsdale Daily, your go-to for the scoop on the most important things going on in town.

(David Allen/Patch)

Welcome back, Scottsdale! It's Thursday, so let's get you started with everything you need to know going on in town today.

First, today's weather: Dropping down from yesterday's 112, the high today is 108, with a low of 90.

Here are the top stories in Scottsdale today:

  1. Michael Aguilar, a custodian at Ashland Ranch Elementary School, was arrested by Scottsdale police on multiple charges of sex crimes involving kids. Aguilar engaged with undercover officers, via an app, believing them to be underage children. Although Aguilar engaged in sexually explicit conversation with those he thought to be minors, officers say there is no evidence the Gilbert custodian had sexual contact with children. He faces multiple counts of luring of minors for sexual exploitation, in addition to other charges. (AZFamily)
  2. Detective Mike Sanchez, a former Arizona liquor department detective, is under investigation after a stripper reported to the Scottsdale police that Sanchez inappropriately touched her during a sting operation at Skin Cabaret. Sanchez was supposed to be investigating the club for COVID-19 violations last year for the Arizona Department of Liquor Licenses and Control. But Sanchez claims he was also investigating prostitution violations in the VIP room. Internal affairs investigators further report that Sanchez was dishonest during the interview, and altered the original report of the operation. Although not charged, Sanchez was placed on the Brady list, meaning future attorneys can access his records. (ABC15)
  3. The Scottsdale City Council will consider creating an ordinance on "engine braking" due to noise complaints from northern neighborhoods. Engine braking is a way to slow down a vehicle using the engine's internal forces instead of the brakes on the wheels. The Arizona Department of Transportation recommends engine braking to avoid burning out wheel brakes while driving mountainous road. (Scottsdale Progress)
  4. The Scottsdale Unified School District celebrates 125 years of public education this year. In 1896, Chaplain Winfield Scott met with community members to discuss the need for a school. With the district named in his honor, the first school served 14 students up to the eighth grade. (City Sun Times)
