First, today's weather:
A cooler day. It will be sunny with a high of 76 and a low of 52. Enjoy!
Here are the top stories in Scottsdale today:
- An unidentified female hiker died on Lost Dog Wash in Scottsdale Sunday night, according to Abc15. The report said no apparent foul play was involved and that the Scottsdale Police Department and the Maricopa County Medical Examiner are investigating. (ABC15 Arizona)
- Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos (NPH) is an international nonprofit organization created by Phoenician Father William Wasson in Haiti in the 1950s. Orphanages and hospitals have spread well beyond Haiti, and according to its website, "NPH transforms the lives of thousands of children and families throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. With the help of people across the world, we provide homes, health services, and educational programs in a safe and loving environment." On Saturday, a successful fundraising event was held at St. Bernard's Church in Scottsdale to support Haiti's relief efforts following the devastating earthquake in August, according to a FOX10 report. The facilities serve 1,700 children on the island, according to the report. (FOX 10 News Phoenix)
- A $700 a month rent increase is forcing Theresa Yoakum to leave her Scottsdale home and look for more affordable housing. A report by AZ Family captures her disbelief. "How can we afford this payment per month?" asked Yoakum. "It's just astonishing just to see the dollar figure... I understand there's going to be an increase, I've seen $50, maybe $100, but $800 a month? Where does that put renters that can't afford it? We have to look for something else; we have to go elsewhere." According to the report, the Yoakums are not alone; the valley is awash with dramatic rent hikes following lease renewals. The Yoakums are among thousands of renters across the Phoenix metro area who are getting hit by some serious sticker shock when it's time to renew their lease. A statement from The San Portalas apartments read, "While we are a luxury apartment community in one of the most sought-after locations — north Scottsdale — our rates remain under market value or less than competitors in this area... we have a number of programs in place to help our valued community members maintain the stability of their homes." (AZ Family)
