Here are the top three stories in Scottsdale today:
- On Wednesday, Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich announced a lawsuit against the Scottsdale Unified School District board for allegedly violating open meeting laws last August. The complaint claims the SUSD board issued "content-based restrictions" on public comment, and attendees were only allowed to talk about one of the agenda items. Furthermore, the suit asks that board member Jann-Michael Greenburg be removed and that civil penalties be imposed on the board to ensure no future open meeting law violations occur. The school district maintains that the board complied with the open meeting law. (ABC15 Arizona in Phoenix)
- Together with Varsity Tutors, the Scottsdale Unified School District is putting its federal relief funds to good use by offering free tutoring to students. According to the District, the online tutoring program will help fill in some learning gaps that occurred during COVID-19 remote learning periods and current school staffing shortages. Scottsdale students can now get six hours of free, personalized tutoring for "targeted supplemental help," said Brian Galvin, Chief Academic Officer at Varsity Tutors. About 400 local families have reportedly signed up for the Varsity Tutors program so far. (12news.com KPNX)
- Maricopa County prosecutors say they intend to seek the death penalty against a couple who have been accused of killing an 11-year-old boy at a Scottsdale hotel in January. A notice filed by the County Attorney's Office said that it will ask for the death penalty if Stephanie M. Davis, the victim's grandmother, and Thomas J. Desharnais, are convicted of first-degree murder. The pair have pleaded "not guilty," and court documents indicate that their trials are set to begin later this year. (ABC15 Arizona in Phoenix)
