Morning, neighbors! It's me again, Geoff Campbell, your host of the Scottsdale Daily. Make your Wednesday a great one!

First, today's weather:

Loving the weather of late! Partly cloudy throughout the day. High: 86, low: 70.

Here are the top stories in Scottsdale today:

  1. Zumper, a national rental site, ranks Scottsdale tenth in rental costs. As reported by KPNX, increases in the population, the number of units being "flipped," and the purchase price of area homes are the chief causes of the rent increases. In a recent study of national rents, Zumper puts the one-bedroom rate for rentals in Scottsdale at $1,800. The simultaneous increase in rents and sale prices creates a bind, making it harder for those looking to own homes or afford rents. (12news.com KPNX)
  2. In a related story, the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors recently voted to provide legal services for renters in Maricopa County. They are likely to be evicted as a result of non-payment. [Curator's note: According to Statista.com, Maricopa is ranked fourth in a list of the U.S. counties with the highest population. Counties one-three in descending order are: Los Angeles/ Los Angeles, Cook/Chicago, and Harris/Houston.] The County Board has hired Community Legal Services (CLS) at the cost of $2.6 million; the agreement ends in June of next year. Clients will be limited to tenants within the shadow of eviction, finding themselves the fiscal victims of COVID-19. For more information visit www.Maricopa.gov/HelpWithBills. (Press Release Desk)
  3. A new Cigna Healthcare program addressing the emotional wellbeing of local firefighters is currently being piloted in Scottsdale, according to a recent In the Know Podcast (Independent News Media). The program is rooted in a growing understanding of the toll that the daily stress of a firefighter's job takes on each first responder. Scottsdale Fire Fighter Capt. Jonathan Perona of Engine 602 and Rodgers Wilson, M.D., medical director for Cigna Arizona, are featured on the podcast. (Your Valley)
  4. Arizona State University and the Scottsdale Environmental Advisory have teamed up to complete a three-phased plan, including "a sustainability scan, planning workshops, and a final report and presentations." According to the City Sun Times, similar projects in Phoenix and Tempe were successful. Chief goals of the program include the reduction of greenhouse gasses and better management of local natural resources. Final reports are expected early in 2023. (citysuntimes)
