Now, your local weather:

Today we are blessed with plenty of sunshine, with a high of 93 and low of 69.

Here are the top stories in Scottsdale today:

  1. Scottsdale ranked as the No. 8 best place to raise a family on WalletHub's list of "2023's Best & Worst Places to Raise a Family." To determine the rankings, WalletHub analyzed "182 U.S. cities using five factors: family fun, health & safety, education & child care, affordability and socio-economics." Then, they evaluated these factors using 45 relevant metrics, such as school-system quality, walkability, and child-care costs. Eight other Arizona cities made the list, including Gilbert at No. 9 and Chandler at No. 21. (NewsBreak)
  2. The city asks that residents and businesses voluntarily "cut water use by at least 5%" and is offering guidance and resources to help. Desert landscape should be watered no more than twice a week and between 7 p.m. and 10 a.m. to limit evaporation and maximize plant care. Additional landscape watering guidelines can be found here. The city offers free irrigation system checkups, which can be scheduled by calling 480-312-5650. Residents can also take advantage of water saving rebates and access water use and leak notifications through the WaterSmart portal. (City of Scottsdale)
  3. Cold Beers & Cheeseburgers will host the 1st Annual 2023 Summer Slider Eating Contest on June 17 at 3:00 p.m. at all locations, including all four Scottsdale locations. There is a limit of 10 contestants per location, and those interested can register online. The first contestant to finish 30 slides in under 10 minutes during this first round will move on to the championship, which will take place at the Scottsdale 4th of July Celebration at WestWorld. From my notebook:

  • "Scottsdale has more critical wildfire risk due to the urban interface with much of the McDowell Sonoran Preserve and other vegetation rich open space areas. The fire department has taken a multi-pronged approach to the mitigation efforts including reducing fuels along identified roadways, deploying brush trucks in high risk areas, encouraging communities to become designated Firewise® USA, conducting inspections in construction areas, and encouraging wildfire readiness for homeowners." (Scottsdale Fire Department via Facebook)
  • "We're hiring! Here are the current openings for career opportunities with #ScottsdalePD. For more information about these jobs and the benefits package offered by the city of Scottsdale, visit ScottsdalePD.com." (Scottsdale Police Department via Facebook)
  • "Join us at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 10th at the Mustang Library Auditorium for DuoOcotillo. In this interactive musical program, you'll come together with other audience members to choose what song is played next from a menu of choices that reflect musical traditions from across the centuries and around the globe. No registration is required. Seating is limited." (Scottsdale Public Library via Facebook)
  • "Get a head start learning about city issues, projects and activities by attending or listening in on the many public meetings we host. Here's what's coming up: Paths and Trails Subcommittee: 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 6; Veterans Advisory Commission: 5 p.m. Wednesday, June 7; Board of Adjustment: 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 7...
