Here are the top stories today in Scottsdale:
- The city of Scottsdale released a draft budget of $2.54 billion for the fiscal year running July 1, 2023, through June 30, 2024. This is a 20% increase from the current $2.11 billion budget and almost double the $1.36 billion budget of four years ago. The new budget is described as balancing "strong local economy with a cautious approach to the future," accounting for the revenue from a strong special events season but also anticipating an economic downturn. To support "hiring and retaining a skilled workforce... [to provide] quality service to citizens and visitors," the budget includes "an increase of approximately $38 million for existing employees." - The Italian Daughter Pizzeria will open this fall at 32607 N Scottsdale Road! The restaurant will be a sister concept of The Italian Daughter, which owner Melissa Maggiore-Meyer opened to honor her late father, Tomaso Maggiore. Featuring "wood-fired Neapolitan and Sicilian-style pizza," guests can also enjoy "craft boards, a lounge area, charcuterie options, live music, beer on tap, craft cocktails, elevated paninis, salads, and Sicilian and Calabrese street food." Though Tomaso Maggiore's restaurant on Camelback, Tomaso's, will close in May, his son Joey Maggiore will also open a new restaurant in his honor, called Il Massetos, right across the street. Joey owns many well-known restaurants as well, including The Sicilian Butcher, The Sicilian Baker, Hash Kitchen and The Mexicano Concepts. (NewsBreak)
- Scottsdale resident Bob Kurtz is working on a never-before-achieved golf record! The 82-year-old, known as "Golf's Ironman," already holds a Guinness World Record for playing 72 holes of golf in three hours and five minutes. Now, over 10 years later, he will compete against himself and "attempt to shoot a score that totals his age or lower by shooting left-handed and right-handed." Guests can attend today's event, "The Great Both Sides Charity Challenge: A 72 hole event," at noon at Ancala Country Club, 11700 E Via Linda. Though admission is free, donations are appreciated and funds will be raised for New Leaf and Family Promise. (Scottsdale Progress)
