Scottsdale Schools Hosting Event For Prospective Bus Drivers

Saturday's 'drive and hire' event gives drivers a chance to see how it feels behind the wheel, as the district looks to fill 20 open jobs.

SCOTTSDALE, AZ —The Scottsdale Unified School District (SUSD) is holding a Test Drive and Hiring Event this Saturday, as the district looks to fill 20 open bus driver positions.

The event, which will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Apache Park SUSD Bus Yard, 1201 N. 85th Place in Scottsdale, will give those interested in becoming district bus drivers a chance to see how they feel behind the wheel.

Anyone with a clean driving record and a current driver's license is invited to the event, where they can drive one of the district's new technology-equipped school buses. The driving will take place on a closed course and be supervised by a Transportation Department trainer.

Those who like the feel of driving a bus can complete an application and get a same-day, on-site
interview, the district said.

The bus-driving jobs the district is looking to fill are flexible and part-time positions with a starting rate of $16.94 per hour, plus a signing bonus.

The district is looking to hire drivers for its 84-passenger busses, 14-passenger mini-buses and wheelchair buses.

"School districts nationwide have been facing a bus driver shortage in recent years, and SUSD is no different," the district said in a statement. "Because many people think driving a 40-foot-long, 84-passenger yellow school bus would be intimidating, we are giving job seekers a chance to find out for themselves."

SUSD also is looking to hire bus mechanics to maintain the fleet and bus aides to assist special needs students.
