Here are the top stories today in Scottsdale:

  1. Scottsdale and Paradise Valley are putting teeth into laws concerning short-term rental properties. According to reporting in the Scottsdale Independent, the goal is to "maintain health, safety and respectful neighborliness in residential communities." Scottsdale approved two new ordinances in December. Paradise Valley is sponsoring a public debate on "expanding the definition of 'special events'; requiring standard health and safety measures to protect renters; expanding existing noise regulations to capture nuisance issues; making emergency contact numbers publicly available." Ultimately the changes in both towns are resulting in much more responsibility for owners. (Your Valley)
  2. Cancer survivor Emma Kerr and her family were confused and concerned by the recent change in the COVID-19 policy at SUSD. KJZZ reported that Emma and her mom, Ildi Lacszko-Kerr, took issue when the district dropped the mask requirement in the middle of an ongoing spike of COVID-19 cases. "I am worried about my child and other kids and staff like her that are put in jeopardy of potentially getting serious cases of COVID-19 if they were to get sick from being at school," Ildi said. Emma is currently working remotely, and the district has declared that they remain flexible about reinstating the previous policy if they believe it is necessary for safety reasons. (KJZZ)
  3. Maricopa County Health inspectors dinged the Metropolis of Scottsdale four times last month, according to a report on AZ Central. The violations included sanitation, serving temperature, storage temperature issues, and out-of-date food. (AZCentral.com)
