Here are the top stories today in Scottsdale:

  1. Brandon Smith, 32, has been formally charged after the vicious attack of a flight attendant on the Sky Train platform in Terminal 4 very early Friday morning. According to the report, the police have named it a hate crime and describe the attack this way: "Smith came up from behind, kicking the woman and then punching her in the face. She was knocked to the ground, and he kept kicking her... she fought back, and that's when he threw a metal sign and hand sanitizer stand at her. He did this while yelling, "go back to your own (expletive) country." Reportedly the flight attendant suffered minor injuries (Arizona's Family)
  2. Once again, Scottsdale area trailheads are receiving significant design attention. Arizona Forward recognized McDowell Sonoran Preserve's Fraesfield and Granite Mountain trailheads for "Natural Environment Preservation" and "Civic Buildings, Structures, and Landscape Design." The award, Crescordia, is the top award in each of the categories above. The honors were bestowed at the recent Environmental Excellence Awards program. (Press Release Desk)
  3. Optima Inc., a Scottsdale-based developer, is planning a luxury residential community at the cost of $1 billion. The 1,500 luxury units, the company's largest effort to date, are intended for north Scottsdale. The pre-application has been submitted, according to the Business Journals. "This process is just starting," said David Hovey Jr., president, COO, and principal architect of Optima. "We anticipate when completed, the project will have a total capital investment in the neighborhood of $1 billion." (The Business Journals-subscribe)
