Former Corona Del Sol coach suspected in road rage incident, police say (fresnobee.com) — A Tempe Union High School District assistant football coach from Corona del Sol High School has been fired after Mesa police say he admitted firing a gun during an alleged road rage confrontation. The incident, which involved shots at another vehicle and multiple collisions, has led to several felony charges and a scheduled court appearance this week, raising safety concerns for local families.
2. Two historic downtown Tempe buildings could have new tenants soon (ktar.com) — Tempe is moving ahead with plans to lease two historic Mill Avenue buildings it recently acquired, including the former Darkstar Theater space. City Council held public hearings August 31 and will hold a final hearing September 10 as officials seek distinctive restaurant, retail, or entertainment tenants that fit the downtown core and could reshape this prominent stretch of Mill for residents and visitors.
3. ASU identifies Matthew Mayich as hospitalized hockey player for 1st time (arizonasports.com) — Arizona State University in Tempe has publicly identified hockey player Matthew Mayich as the athlete still hospitalized after collapsing during an intense outdoor workout in August. As his family's attorneys say he has no chance of recovery and call for an independent investigation, ASU leaders are conducting an internal review of the workout and heat-safety policies that affect student-athletes practicing in Arizona's extreme temperatures.
4. Man accused of breaking into Tempe church, causing $10,000 in damages (azcentral.com) — A Tempe church, Grace Community Church, sustained about $10,000 in damage after a Mesa man allegedly broke in, vandalized equipment and facilities, and stole property including a PlayStation. Tempe and Mesa police used surveillance and body-camera footage to identify and arrest the suspect, who now faces burglary and aggravated criminal damage charges and is scheduled for a court appearance on September 17.
5. SAF Names 2026 Marketer of the Year (floristsreview.com) — Tempe Blooms is drawing nearly 100,000 visitors and millions in local economic impact, turning downtown streets into immersive floral installations and hands-on activities. Arizona Flower Market just won a national marketing award for building this Tempe-centered festival, which showcases local florists, boosts nearby businesses, and keeps visitors engaged for hours with workshops, competitions, and social-media-ready experiences.
