• Processor pays $12M to settle 'sham' merchant case (paymentsdive.com) — A Tempe-based payment processor, Humboldt Merchant Services, has agreed to pay $12 million to settle Federal Trade Commission allegations it handled payments for more than 1,000 sham merchant accounts tied to unauthorized billing scams. The company, operating as 5967 Ventures, denies wrongdoing but must stop credit card laundering and cut off several high-risk merchant categories, putting a major Tempe business under tighter federal oversight.
• Tempe council member proposes putting ban on license plate reader cameras into city code (azfamily.com) — Tempe leaders are weighing a first-in-Arizona law that would permanently ban police use of automated license plate reader cameras and require existing data to be destroyed. Councilmember Bobby Nichols plans to introduce the ordinance Sept. 24, and residents can weigh in through an online survey as debate continues over balancing crime-fighting tools with privacy concerns.
• Love it or hate it, Valley Metro lauded for nation's 'best' service (azcentral.com) — Valley Metro's bus, light rail, and Tempe streetcar system just earned a national award for reliability and safety, with ridership nearly back to pre-pandemic levels. The network logged about 42 million trips last year, boosted by the new south Phoenix light rail extension, while officials now plan a major bus network redesign and a West Phoenix rail expansion.
