📰 News we're reading

1. Multiple water rescues, crashes keep first responders busy as rain floods Phoenix area roads (azfamily.com) — Flooding in and around Tonopah turned roads into rivers, forcing first responders into multiple water rescues, including a dramatic helicopter save of a driver stranded on an overturned truck. Crews say the water rose quickly and that this same spot floods repeatedly. They're urging Tonopah drivers to avoid familiar low-water crossings whenever heavy rain hits.

2. Plans for a massive film studio and retail complex in Tonopah also include a large-scale data center (kjzz.org) — A massive mixed-use project in Tonopah could bring a huge film studio, data center campus, golf course, and amusement attractions to 1,350 acres just off the Phoenix–LA corridor. With zoning already approved, the developer now faces big questions about securing enough power and water, while promising relatively low water use compared with housing. Construction could start within two years if final plans pass.

3. Arizona sheriff's helicopter crew rescues man stranded atop overturned truck in rapidly rising floodwaters (nytimespost.com) — A man stranded on top of his overturned truck in a flooded Tonopah wash was airlifted to safety by the Maricopa County Sheriff's Fox 1 helicopter crew after rapidly rising water made ground rescue too dangerous. Officials say the hoist operation took under five minutes and are warning Tonopah drivers to avoid flooded roads as remnants of Hurricane Polo continue to fuel flash flooding.

4. Massive Industrial Proposal Could Reshape More Than 5,000 Acres West of Phoenix (newsbreak.com) — A Scottsdale developer is seeking industrial zoning for more than 5,100 acres near Tonopah, shifting much of the Belmont master-plan area from planned housing to potential warehouses, distribution centers, and energy facilities. Maricopa County already approved a key land-use change, citing demand for employment land and proximity to the proposed Interstate 11 corridor. Specific projects and construction timelines have not yet been announced.

5. New Mexico flooding pushes dam to the brink, forcing evacuations (weather.com) — Intense rains from the remnants of Hurricane Polo are driving dangerous flash flooding across New Mexico and the Desert Southwest, and Tonopah is seeing the impacts too. A local driver clinging to an overturned truck west of Phoenix had to be hoisted to safety by a Maricopa County Sheriff's helicopter team. Officials across the region are warning residents to avoid driving through floodwaters.
