TUCSON, AZ — Tucson drivers who use Grant Road near Interstate 10 should start planning a new route now.

A significant stretch of the road is shutting down for more than two months starting later this month.

Beginning at 5:30 a.m. on May 22, the city will close Grant Road between the westbound I-10 Frontage Road and Flowing Wells Road.

The closure is expected to last until Aug. 5 as crews work on a new underpass at the Union Pacific Railroad tracks, officials said.

The project promises long-term benefits for the corridor. The city says the underpass will reduce traffic congestion, improve signals and crosswalks, upgrade sidewalks and ADA access, and improve drainage in an area that has long needed attention.

In the meantime, getting around will take some adjustment.

Drivers will not be able to turn right onto Grant Road from the westbound I-10 Frontage Road during the closure. Eastbound Grant Road traffic can still reach westbound I-10, but only through a single left-turn lane at the underpass.

The Tucson Department of Transportation and Mobility is steering drivers toward the I-10 Frontage Road, Miracle Mile, Oracle Road and Speedway Boulevard as alternate routes.

Some impacts are already underway. Work that began May 4 on sidewalks, curbs and gutters near Fairview Avenue has westbound Grant Road narrowed to two lanes, though businesses along the north side of the road remain accessible.

That phase wraps up around May 22, when the larger closure begins.

Grant Road is scheduled to reopen Aug. 5, with minor work continuing through a projected project completion in September.

Sidewalk access and emergency vehicle routes will remain open for the duration of the project.

The city said the schedule may change due to weather or other unforeseen conditions, with the latest updates available on its website.
