TUCSON, AZ — The wait is finally over.
A new Trader Joe's opened its doors near the University of Arizona this week, capping a two-year stretch of anticipation that began when construction plans for the site were first submitted back in 2023.
The store, situated at the busy intersection of Broadway Boulevard and Campbell Avenue, held its ribbon-cutting at 7:55 a.m. on May 29 before welcoming its first shoppers five minutes later.
It is the fourth Trader Joe's in Tucson and operates daily from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.
The 9,625-square-foot location brought more than 30 new crew members on board from surrounding areas, with additional staff transferring in from nearby stores.
For residents near the university who have been watching the construction site for two years, the opening was a long time coming. The reaction from the community reflected just that.
The new location is part of a broader nationwide push by the Monrovia-based grocery chain. Stores listed as "opening soon" on the company's website span Texas, Kansas, Washington, Florida, Georgia and two locations in Louisiana, with another Arizona location also in the pipeline.
Trader Joe's has said its expansion is anything but rushed. In a 2024 episode of the Inside Trader Joe's podcast, marketing executives Tara Miller and Matthew Sloan outlined the factors the company weighs before committing to a new site, including population density, traffic patterns, site access and parking.
"This is very deliberate, and for us, what's important is that it's controlled growth," Sloan said. "We have to grow in a way that fits our business model."
For university-area shoppers, the result of that deliberate approach is a new grocery option at one of the city's busiest corners and one less reason to drive across town.
