New Construction Milestone Reached On Tucson's Grant Road Project

The city said the voter-approved Grant Road underpass project is still scheduled to reopen in early August.

TUCSON, AZ — The Grant Road underpass project is still on track to reopen in early August, according to a new update from the City of Tucson.

Crews from KE&G have fully removed the median in the project area over the past month, the city said. Demolition, drainage upgrades, roadway resurfacing and ADA improvements are all underway as several parts of the project move forward at once.

Grant Road remains closed between Interstate 10 and Flowing Wells Road while crews install new curbs, sidewalks and medians, pour cement for jersey barriers separating eastbound and westbound traffic, and prepare the roadway for resurfacing.

The work is part of the voter-approved Regional Transportation Authority project aimed at easing congestion on Grant Road between Fairview Avenue and the eastbound I-10 frontage road.

Planned upgrades include six lanes of traffic, expanded turn lane access at I-10 and Grant Road, extended sidewalks, updated traffic signals and crosswalks and improved drainage.

The full closure, the city said, is meant to speed up construction. Drivers cannot turn right onto Grant Road from the westbound I-10 frontage road during the closure, and eastbound Grant Road traffic reaching westbound I-10 is limited to a single left-turn lane at the underpass.

Emergency vehicles and pedestrians will continue to have access throughout.

As before, the city is steering drivers toward the I-10 frontage road, Miracle Mile, Oracle Road and Speedway Boulevard as alternate routes.

The latest update keeps Grant Road on pace to reopen between I-10 and Flowing Wells Road in early August.
