TUCSON, AZ — Drivers using the Grant Road underpass at Interstate 10 should expect lane shifts early Thursday and Friday morning as crews move into the next phase of pavement work.
Crews will begin applying a fog seal treatment to the outside lanes at 3 a.m. Thursday. Because those lanes are already closed, the work is not expected to affect traffic that morning.
On Friday, also starting at 3 a.m., traffic will shift to the outside lanes while crews treat the inside lanes. Once that work is complete, traffic control will return to the outside lanes.
A fog seal is a thin asphalt coating used to fill small cracks and surface imperfections, helping preserve and extend the life of the pavement. The city said the work is intended to protect the road surface rather than rebuild it.
Both work windows begin before sunrise, when traffic is lighter, but drivers should still expect shifting lane patterns and construction crews in the area. The schedule could change because of weather or other unforeseen issues, the city said.
The fog seal work is part of the larger Grant Road underpass project, which has closed Grant Road between I-10 and Flowing Wells Road since earlier this year. The voter-approved Regional Transportation Authority project is still on track to reopen that stretch in early August.
Crews have been installing new curbs, sidewalks, medians and jersey barriers while also completing drainage and ADA improvements. Drivers can use the I-10 frontage road, Miracle Mile, Oracle Road and Speedway Boulevard as alternate routes.
