Tucson Shooting Victims Recovering After Downtown Mass Shooting

TUCSON, AZ — Many of the victims injured in last weekend's mass shooting in downtown Tucson have been released from the hospital and are continuing to recover, Tucson Police Chief Chad Kasmar said Monday as the investigation remains ongoing.

The shooting happened around 2 a.m. July 19 near East Congress Street and Sixth Avenue. Police say officers responding to reports of gunfire encountered a man running from the scene. After officers gave him multiple commands, one officer shot the suspect.

Nine people were injured in the shooting, most with gunshot wounds to their arms or legs, according to police.

Officers provided emergency medical care until Tucson Fire Department crews arrived and rushed the victims to local hospitals. No officers were injured.

In a public update Monday, Kasmar said many of the victims have since been released from the hospital, while others continue to recover.

"The Tucson community can have confidence in knowing that their police department is ready and prepared, which was evident in our response," Kasmar said.

Kasmar also thanked police officers, firefighters, community members, local businesses and staff at Banner University Medical Center for assisting victims in the aftermath of the shooting.

The suspect has been arrested and will be booked into the Pima County Adult Detention Complex after being released from the hospital, Kasmar said. The suspect remained hospitalized after being shot by an officer during the incident.

Police said there will continue to be a visible law enforcement presence in downtown Tucson as the investigation moves forward.

The officer-involved shooting is being investigated by the Pima Regional Critical Incident Team, led by the Pima County Sheriff's Department.

Tucson police are also conducting an internal review of the officer's actions, which is standard procedure.
