TUCSON, AZ — A 55-year-old man has died from injuries he suffered in a hit-and-run crash on Tucson's east side nearly two weeks earlier, and police are still searching for the driver who struck him.
Michael Shawn McNeal died July 9, more than a week after he was hit by a vehicle while crossing East Broadway Boulevard near South Cherry Avenue on June 29, according to the Tucson Police Department.
He was initially treated for injuries that were considered non-life-threatening, but the Pima County Office of the Medical Examiner later determined he died from injuries related to the crash.
Police said McNeal was crossing Broadway from north to south while using a mobility walker when he was struck by an eastbound vehicle around 8:30 p.m.
Investigators said witnesses and surveillance video from a nearby business showed McNeal was crossing mid-block rather than at a marked or unmarked crosswalk.
The driver involved in the crash did not stop and has not been identified.
Tucson police said the circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation. The case has been assigned to the department's Traffic Investigations Unit, which is working to identify the vehicle and driver involved.
Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call 911 or 88-CRIME to provide information anonymously.
McNeal's death adds to a growing number of traffic fatalities in Tucson this year. Police have reported 52 traffic deaths so far in 2026, including 20 pedestrian deaths, three bicycle deaths, nine motorcycle deaths and 20 vehicle deaths.
At the same point in 2025, Tucson had reported 42 traffic fatalities, including 10 pedestrian deaths.
