📰 News we're reading

1. AZPM's News Weekend: These are the five must-read stories of the week for Oct. 5-9 (azpm.org) — Tucson food lovers face a big change as iconic hot dog spot El Güero Canelo goes up for sale, even as Tucson Meet Yourself and Slugfest prepare to draw crowds downtown this month. The roundup also highlights UA's fraternity suspension, a major audit of Arizona Schools for the Deaf and Blind, border-wall protests near Lochiel, and a capital-punishment controversy with Tucson ties.

2. 'One more scare': The Slaughterhouse rises from the dead for one more season (kgun9.com) — Tucson horror fans get one last chance to brave the Slaughterhouse, as the longtime haunted attraction returns for a final season of clowns, jump scares, and jarring lights. Veteran and new scare actors are working weekends through the end of October, giving families and thrill-seekers multiple chances to visit before the doors close for good.

3. Tucson Man Criminally Charged for Bomb Threat Against the White House (crweworld.com) — A Tucson man has been federally charged after allegedly emailing a local TV station a threat to bomb the White House and other Washington, D.C. locations, prompting an FBI investigation. Prosecutors in the U.S. Attorney's Office in Tucson emphasize that community tips were crucial and that all defendants remain presumed innocent while the case proceeds in federal court.

4. Uri Sharon, Soldier and Artist, Explores Grief, Innocence at 10/7 Event (azjewishpost.com) — Tucson's Jewish community recently gathered at the Tucson Jewish Community Center for "Kindling Hope," marking three years since the Oct. 7 attacks with prayers, stories from Israeli guests, and a candle-lighting ceremony. Speakers, including new emissary Shay Oren and artist-soldier Uri Sharon, reflected on grief, resilience, Jewish identity, and how local programs aim to strengthen young Jews' confidence and connection to their history.

5. Medicaid cuts strip refugees and other legal immigrants of their health coverage (pressherald.com) — A Tucson family caring for a ventilator-dependent son is among thousands of legal immigrants in Arizona who just lost Medicaid coverage under new federal restrictions. The change, effective October 1, especially affects refugees and trafficking survivors, leaving many unsure how they'll afford life-sustaining care and medications as Arizona alone removes 29,000 legal immigrants from its Medicaid rolls.
