Black Bear Cub Spotted In Pima County Neighborhood
The cub was spotted this morning near homes in the East Windswept Way and South Shalom Drive area of Vail.
TUCSON, AZ — A black bear cub was spotted in a Vail neighborhood Tuesday morning, prompting a warning from the Pima County Sheriff's Department for residents to keep their distance.
The cub was seen near East Windswept Way and South Shalom Drive. Arizona Game and Fish has been notified and is responding.
Wildlife officials say the sighting is not unusual. Bears frequently move through neighborhoods while searching for food, and young bears in particular tend to roam widely in the spring as they search for new territory.

Drought, wildfire and urban development can also push bears into residential areas when natural food sources are scarce.
A bear passing through on its own is generally not a threat. If residents have secured their garbage, pet food and other attractants, the animal will likely move on.

Problems arise when bears find food in neighborhoods and begin to lose their natural wariness of people, which can create safety risks for both residents and the bear.
If you see the bear:
Don't approach. Back away slowly and give the animal space to leave. Never run. If the bear approaches you, stand your ground, make yourself look as large as possible, make loud noises and use bear spray if you have it. Do not play dead if attacked; fight back.
If the bear enters your yard, try to scare it off from inside your home with the door closed. If it refuses to leave, contact Arizona Game and Fish dispatch at 623-236-7201. Dispatchers are available 24 hours a day.
