Cathay Williams, an African American woman, successfully posed as a man and served in the US Army in the 1860s. Floyd Gray will discuss her experiences as a Buffalo Soldier, serving in the 38th Infantry (one of six segregated, all-black regiments) during the Civil War.
Floyd Gray is an Adjunct Researcher in the Department of Geosciences at the University of Arizona. He serves as the Vice President on the Board of Friends of Tucson's Birthplace. This walking tour covers much of the Turquoise Trail through the heart of downtown through the Barrio Streetscape (Stop 15 on the brochure). The tour then turns north on Church Avenue heading back to the Presidio Museum. This tour is a bit shorter than the full tour of the Turquoise Trail, at two miles walked over two hours, attendees learn about Tucson’s fascinating history while viewing some architectural gems. This tour is good for those who want a bit shorter tour than our 2.5-hour Turquoise Trail Tour.
