TUCSON, AZ — Tucson drivers should prepare for overnight lane restrictions as work gets underway on the Arizona Department of Transportation's I-19 Irvington Interchange Improvements Project. Construction began late last week on the 20-month project to rebuild the Interstate 19 and Irvington Road interchange. ADOT says the project is designed to improve traffic flow and safety by widening Irvington Road to three lanes in each direction, adding lanes to I-19 ramps and building a new bridge over the interstate with additional travel and turn lanes. The project will also replace the existing diamond interchange design with a partial cloverleaf ramp at Irvington Road. Crews will install new traffic signals, lighting, signage and pavement markings as part of the work. For drivers, the first impacts are coming through overnight restrictions. Construction is scheduled weekdays from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., with lane restrictions expected on Irvington Road between 12th Avenue and Calle Santa Cruz. ADOT says two lanes of travel will remain open in each direction on Irvington Road during construction. The project also includes improvements for people who walk and bike, including pedestrian and bicycle facilities on both sides of Irvington Road. Construction is expected to continue for about 20 months, with completion projected for spring 2028. ADOT said the schedule could change because of weather or other unexpected issues. Drivers traveling through the Irvington Road and I-19 area should expect long-term construction impacts as crews work to complete the interchange upgrades.
