March Is School Social Work Month In Tucson

In thousands of ways, social workers help people help themselves. They assist people of every age and background. In schools, social workers help students address troubles that could interfere with their learning. They act as a connection for school, home, and community services to help children with emotional, developmental, and educational needs.

School social workers are trained mental health professionals who assist with mental health concerns, behavioral challenges, positive behavioral support, academic and classroom support, and consultation with teachers, parents and administrators.

School social workers are instrumental in establishing an effective setting for teaching, learning, and the attainment of competence and confidence for our students. They bring unique knowledge and skills to the school system and the student services team. They are are especially skilled in providing services to our students who face serious challenges to school success, including poverty, disability, discrimination, abuse, addiction, bullying, loss of a loved one, and other barriers to learning.

The Tucson Unified Governingn Board has declared March as School Social Work Month. Please read the proclamation (in PDF), and join us in recognizing the valuable contributions of our school social workers.
