I spoke with Logan Greene, Executive Director of Groundworks,, opens a new window a youth-driven arts nonprofit here in Tucson about their summer plans. Groundworks formed in 2019 and acquired a space in 2020 just as the pandemic hit. They rapidly changed their plans to create virtual programming in the summer of 2020. Their music venue and in-person gallery space at 236 S. Tucson Blvd went unused as they made the transition to virtual programming. They are committed to developing the creativity and talent in Tucson’s youth arts scene and are passionate about making arts education accessible to all, regardless of income or situation.
This summer, they will provide art kits and music kits for youth age 6 to 10, pre-teens and teens. There will be virtual lessons and well as self-guided lessons as youth create art and music for a final showcase at the end of the summer. Logan told me he has ukuleles for the youth to use and there will be an audio or video component to the kits where youth have the option to record their creations. Groundworks also has plans for a virtual workshop series on niche subjects like character design and a pop-culture collaboration with Bookmans Entertainment Exchange, opens a new window.
