Roundabout Causes Confusion In Tucson’s Elvira Neighborhood

Elvira neighborhood resident says Tucson motorists are confused by a roundabout installed at San Fernando and Medina roads.

TUCSON, AZ — A new roundabout at the intersection of San Fernando and Medina roads in Tucson’s south-side Elvira neighborhood to slow traffic is causing some confusion among neighbors.

The intersection was controlled by a four-way stop for many years, but the city transportation department installed the roundabout a couple of months ago. Motorists are hesitant and unsure what to do, some people who live in the Elvira neighborhood says.

City officials say it will take some time for motorists to adjust, but it will make the area safer.

Jesse Soto, the Tucson Department of Transportation’s project manager, told news station KGUN that 60 percent of residents of the Elvira neighborhood approved of the roundabout as a traffic control measure.

Julio Trejo, who has lived in the Elvira neighborhood for about 15 years, told KGUN that “a lot of people haven't really followed the roundabout rules,” especially when they don’t see a lot of traffic.

Soto said the transportation department has fielded complaints the roundabout isn’t wide enough for both automobiles and pedestrians, but told KGUN the traffic circle was built to design standards.
