📰 News we're reading

• Future48 Workforce Accelerator opens in Yuma County (azbigmedia.com) — A new Future48 Workforce Accelerator has opened in Wellton, giving Yuma County residents hands-on training in high-demand fields like electrical technology, advanced manufacturing, fiber optics, and solar installation. Backed by state funding and local industry partners, the center aims to create pathways to higher-wage jobs and strengthen the region’s workforce for employers including Yuma Proving Ground and local utilities.

• Triple-digit heat sends Yuma residents, visitors searching for ways to cool off (azfamily.com) — Dangerous triple-digit heat is gripping Yuma this Mother’s Day weekend, and more than 20 local cooling and water centers are open to help residents, especially those without air conditioning. Locals and visitors are flocking to the Colorado River, libraries, and even the California coast, while the Yuma County Foothills Library hands out free cooling kits with water, sunscreen, and cold packs.

• Border Patrol Now Targeting Legal Immigrants for ‘Carry Your Papers' Law in Southern Arizona (goodmenproject.com) — Border Patrol agents in the Yuma Sector have been citing legally present immigrants, including people stopped in and around Yuma, for not carrying immigration documents under a rarely used federal “carry your papers” law. Advocates and legal experts warn the practice, often tied to roving traffic stops east of Yuma, may encourage racial profiling and create long‑term immigration consequences for those ticketed.
