1. Onvida Health adds new surgical microscope (kyma.com) — Yuma residents now have access to more advanced spine surgery, as Onvida Health has installed a Leica surgical microscope that lets the entire operating team share a detailed, real-time view. Staff say the technology should improve coordination during complex, minimally invasive procedures and keep specialized spine care closer to home, reducing the need to travel for treatment.
2. New 3-year degree aims to ease Arizona's teacher shortage (azfamily.com) — Aspiring teachers in Yuma County can now finish a bachelor's degree in education in just three years through a new Arizona State University and Arizona Western College partnership. Local students start at AWC, transition to ASU, and are encouraged to stay and teach in nearby schools, helping address Arizona's persistent teacher shortages while keeping homegrown educators in the community.
3. Matadors women's soccer earns No. 1 spot on NJCAA Polls for first time (kyma.com) — Arizona Western College's women's soccer team, based in Yuma, has earned the No. 1 national ranking in the NJCAA Division I poll for the first time in program history. Players and coaches credit their depth, versatility, and strong home-field support in Yuma, but say they're staying focused on turning that top ranking into a long-awaited national championship.
4. Consumer Reports: Contaminants in children's snacks (kyma.com) — Parents in Yuma are being warned that many popular children's packaged snacks may contain concerning levels of contaminants like acrylamide and phthalates, according to new Consumer Reports testing. While some products tested below CR's concern threshold, experts urge families to rotate snack choices, favor whole or homemade foods when possible, and push manufacturers and regulators to reduce these chemicals.
