1. U of A agriculture dean tours Yuma, highlights future of desert farming (kyma.com) — Yuma's farming future is in the spotlight as the University of Arizona's new agriculture dean spends three days touring local research fields, campuses, and the Yuma Center of Excellence for Desert Agriculture. He met with growers, students, and researchers to understand local challenges, from irrigation and food safety to smart-farm technology, and to align university resources with Yuma's desert agriculture needs.
2. MCAS holds open house on PFAS testing (yumasun.com) — If you use a private well near MCAS Yuma, the Navy and Marine Corps are offering free PFAS testing, with sampling scheduled from Sept. 30 to Oct. 7 and possibly longer. At a Yuma Civic Center open house, officials explained health risks, mapped the expanded testing area, and shared options for residents outside the zone to get their water checked.
3. Section of Avenue B to close for road work Wednesday through Friday (yumasun.com) — Avenue B in Yuma County will be closed between County 18th and County 19th streets from 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30, through noon Friday, Oct. 2, for maintenance work. Crews will mill, crack seal, and patch the roadway, and drivers are urged to follow detours or choose alternate routes while conditions are improved.
4. Trail to Leadership: Harold Maxwell to be honored for 40 years in scouting, Christ Lutheran Church for support (yumasun.com) — Local scouting supporters are planning an Oct. 22 Trail to Leadership luncheon at the Elks Lodge to honor longtime scout leader Harold Maxwell and Christ Lutheran Church for decades of service to area youth. With more than 700 Eagle Scouts in Yuma County, organizers invite community members to attend, sponsor tables, and celebrate these often-unsung contributors to local scouting.
5. Arizona Western women's soccer continues undefeated season (kyma.com) — Arizona Western College's women's soccer team kept its unbeaten run alive in Yuma with a 4–1 home win over Yavapai on Matador Field, moving to 7-0-2. After a 1-1 first half, the Matadors dominated after the break, scoring three times to secure a comfortable victory for local fans.
