Morning, people of Yuma! It's me again, Nicole Fallon-Peek, your host of the Yuma Daily.
First, today's weather:
Breezy in the afternoon. High: 82 Low: 54.
Here are the top stories in Yuma today:
- On Saturday, we reported that Antonio Payne, 26, had been arrested by local police on multiple charges related to a Yuma home break-in and sexual assault that occurred in January 2022. On Friday, Payne made his first court appearance, where the victim requested that the maximum bail be set. During the court session, the victim described the alleged attack and expressed "how worried [she] and her daughter have been since the incident." A judge set a $200,00 cash bail for Payne, who remained in custody as of Friday night and will return to court tomorrow, Mar. 29. (KYMA)
- The Yuma County Fair begins tomorrow afternoon, and students of the Future Farmers of America are getting ready to showcase their livestock. The 70th annual fair, which is returning to the Yuma County Fairgrounds in full for the first time since 2019, will feature a carnival, livestock shows, 4H and FFA exhibitors, fine arts displays, and more. "It takes a lot of time and commitment and work, but it's well worth it in the end, the amount of memories you'll get ... [and] the traits that you'll carry over in life ... like commitment, leadership, and working with others," steer exhibitor Gage Taylor told KYMA. (KYMA)
- Calling all Yuma children who love a touch of whimsy and magic: The City of Yuma is hosting a Fairy Party at Sanguinetti House Museum and Gardens on Saturday, Apr. 9. The "party" is open to kids ages 3 to 12 and will be held in three separate 45-minute sessions beginning at 5:30 p.m. Wands will be handed out upon arrival; all your kiddo needs is their best fairy outfit or tutu! Space is limited, so visit the City's website for session registration links. (City of Yuma)
