🌱 AZ Ballot Measure Restrictions? + Senate Candidate Visits Yuma
The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Yuma.
Morning, neighbors! It's me again, Nicole Fallon-Peek, your host of the Yuma Daily.
First, today's weather:
Warm with plenty of sun. High: 90 Low: 56.
Here are the top three stories in Yuma today:
- After missing key legislative deadlines, proposals that would have made it harder to get citizen initiatives on the ballot and harder for voters to enact them once they got there are unlikely to pass. House Concurrent Resolution 2015, which would have required that ballot measures get at least 60 percent of the vote in order to become law, passed out of the House of Representatives. Rep. Tim Dunn who sponsored the measure has said the supermajority threshold to pass citizen initiatives is appropriate because it's nearly impossible for the legislature to amend voter-approved laws. (AZ Mirror)
- A United States Senate candidate, Jim Lamon, visited Yuma on Mar. 22 to host a Latino coalition roundtable event. Lamon discussed immigration, jobs, water issues, and agriculture, which are all topics that impact Yuma regularly. He is on his eighth trip to Yuma since he began his senate campaign. (KYMA)
- Diana Gomez, the director of the Yuma County Public Health Services District and a member of the second cohort of the "Emerging Leaders in Public Health," recently provided an interview to discuss the most pressing public health issues affecting the Yuma community and how her involvement in the initiative has helped her and her colleagues to better address them. "Emerging Leaders in Public Health" is a Kresge Foundation initiative that supports leaders at local and county public health departments to strengthen their organizations and improve the health and well-being of the people in their communities.
