🌱 AZ On Track Summer Camps + Drought Impacts Local Farmers'
The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Yuma.
Morning, people of Yuma! It's me again, Nicole Fallon-Peek, your host of the Yuma Daily.
First, today's weather:
Hot with sizzling sunshine. High: 99 Low: 60.
Here are the top three stories today in Yuma:
- Families across Arizona will be able to enroll their children in free eight-week camps this summer thanks to a 100 million dollar grant from the State Government. According to Lisa Graham Keegan, the director of the initiative, many students across the state fell behind, academically and socially during the pandemic. "AZ on Track Summer Camps" will be held to help mitigate learning loss in the state. One such camp is going to be held at the Yuma Family YMCA and the director says the demand for the program is already through the roof. (KYMA)
- According to the Department of Water Resources, Arizona has experienced extensive drought conditions for two decades due to climate change. Tom Buschatzke, the Director of the Arizona Department of Water Resources, recently stated, "We are entering into an era of limits in which our existing water supplies have mostly been allocated." Yuma farmers, in particular, are feeling the brunt of the drought as they rely on that water supply for their crops. (ABC 15)
- On Wednesday, Apr. 6, Yuma Mayor Douglas Nicholls signed a proclamation ending the City's COVID-19 emergency proclamations. This announcement was made exactly one week after Governor Ducey ended the State's COVID-19 Emergency Declaration. The City recommends people choose to implement appropriate mitigation steps based on each individual's health situation and encourages all businesses to work with City staff for opportunities to continue some operations outdoors.
