🌱 GOP Tours Border + Laundry Room Fire + Yuma Worker Chronicled

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Yuma.

Good morning, neighbors! It's me again, Nicole Fallon-Peek, your host of the Yuma Daily.

First, today's weather:

Plenty of sun. High: 85 Low: 54.

Here are the top three stories in Yuma today:

  1. Members of the House Committee on Oversight and Reform toured the border between the U.S. and Mexico, near Yuma, on Tuesday. GOP members of the committee spoke with local Border Patrol agents, stopping at the southern border to see how they are addressing the increase in illegal migration. The tour was scheduled before the announcement of the expiration of Title 42, a COVID-19 border policy that turns away migrants seeking asylum. The controversial policy is set to expire on May 23. (ABC 15)
  2. The City of Yuma Fire Department successfully extinguished a duplex fire starting in the building's laundry room. On Tuesday morning around 11:24 a.m., crews were called to the scene on East 24th Place, where they quickly took out the fire that originated in the laundry room's ceiling fan. Thankfully, two adults and two dogs were able to escape safely. (KYMA)
  3. The story of a Yuma worker was featured in a piece called "A million empty spaces: Chronicling COVID's ruthless US toll." The article highlights individuals across the United States who lost their lives to COVID, as well as tales and quotes from their family members. One of the featured stories is that of Luis Alfonso Bay Montgomery, who worked in the lettuce and cauliflower fields near Yuma, and continued to work even after he became sick in mid-June of 2020.
