🌱 West Wetlands Park Closed Due To Fire + Pavement Preservation Work

Here are the top three stories in Yuma today:
- After multiple fires broke out before sunrise on Friday (Apr. 8) morning, the City of Yuma closed West Wetlands Park until further notice. Yuma Parks and Recreation workers were the first to notice two small fires, and they attempted to extinguish them before the flames spread. The entire park, including Stewart Vincent Wolfe Creative Playground, the pond, walking trails, boat ramp, and beaches, will remain closed with no estimation of when it will reopen. (KYMA)
- The City of Yuma Public Works Department is gearing up to start its spring pavement preservation work on Monday, Apr. 11. The goal of the project is to improve driving surfaces and extend pavement life spans. The project is expected to run through May 6. Crews will focus primarily on neighborhoods in the southeastern quadrant of the city limits, along with well-traveled streets such as 1st Street and 3rd Street. (City of Yuma)
- In a 54-5 vote, Arizona state lawmakers proposed SB 1162 to remove some of the limits of how much doctors can prescribe opioids to their patients. However, Dr. Bharat Magu, Chief Medical Officer for Yuma Regional Medical Center, has shared his concerns with the bill, namely that the amendment won't significantly change opioid prescribing habits die to the restrictions. - Yesterday, the Yuma Fire Department worked on putting out a fire at the West Wetlands. Jogging and walking trails will be temporarily closed. The Yuma Police Department advised locals to use caution and avoid the area. (Facebook)
