🌱 Yuma Campaign Signs Allowed From May 23 + Yuma Cats Scholarships
The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Yuma.
Good morning, people of Yuma! It's me again, Nicole Fallon-Peek, your host of the Yuma Daily.
First, today's weather:
Hot with plenty of sunshine. High: 98 Low: 63.
Here are the top stories in Yuma today:
- Local, statewide and national elections are coming in August and November this year, which means Yuma residents can expect to see campaign signs appearing as soon as May 23. Properly labeled campaign signage can be placed in the city 71 days prior to the primary election and is regulated by Arizona Revised Statutes section 16-1019. According to Arizona state law, campaign signs are required to contain the name and contact information of the candidate or representative from the candidate's campaign committee. (City of Yuma)
- Since 1991, the Yuma Cats University of Arizona alumni chapter has awarded Yuma-area high school and transfer students locally fundraised and donor-supported scholarships to attend the University of Arizona. The organization interviews the highest performing students in the Yuma area who graduated from any Yuma County high school or were homeschooled. The application process started back in December, and the requirements are a 3.5 GPA or higher, a resume, a personal letter, three reference forms, and transcripts. Since 1991, the Yuma Chapter and scholarship committee have awarded almost 800 students with scholarships and raised over a million dollars all thanks to local fundraising and donor efforts. (KYMA)
- Yuma County Sheriff Wilmot has recently returned from the Arizona State Capitol after meeting with Governor Doug Ducey and other Arizona sheriffs. The governor signed critical legislation cracking down on human smuggling organizations, which Sheriff Wilmot claims will help fill the void in securing the border. During this meeting, the governor and sheriffs discussed the best ways to address the crisis at the border and advance the American Governors' Border Strike Force. (KYMA)
