First, today's weather:
Mostly sunny and very warm. High: 87 Low: 55.
Here are the top three stories in Yuma today:
- The General Services Administration announced late last week that Arizona ports of entry will be receiving at least $315 million in federal funding for upgrades and expansion, including $115 million for the modernization of the San Luis I port. Tuscon Weekly reported that the San Luis project aims to "improve the primary border crossing for Yuma-area farmworkers," which currently experiences long wait times for day laborers and delivery trucks. Robert Medler, government affairs manager for Western Growers, said the San Luis port is "integral to Yuma County's and Arizona's economy to have safe, efficient, cross-border travel and trade." (Tuscon Weekly)
- Governor Doug Ducey has outlined a $1 million plan to bring more water resources to Arizona's decreasing water supply, and it could have a big impact on Yuma farmers. According to the Yuma Crossing National Heritage Area (YCNHA), many endangered species of plants and animals are currently dying due to inadequate access to water. Yuma farmers may be forced to scale back on production if this prolonged drought continues, but Governor Ducey's proposal could expand water resources to the area. (KYMA)
