Here are the top stories today in Yuma:
- The International Sonoran Desert Alliance in Yuma is helping raise money to save a desert treasure in the Southwest deserts of Arizona. Ouitobaquito Springs is a small man-made pond dating from the early 20th century that collects water from a natural spring and is the home of two endangered species: the Sonoyta mud turtle and the Quitobaquito pupfish. The spring and the pond are threatened by increasing temperatures causing longer and more severe droughts. (KOLD News 13)
- On Monday, Apr. 11, Rural Metro Fire responded to a large kitchen fire near Vaughn Avenue. Firefighters arrived at the scene shortly after 3:30 p.m. and successfully extinguished the fire. The kitchen suffered major damage though no injuries were reported at the time. An investigation is still underway to discover the cause of the outbreak. (KYMA)
- The Humane Society of Yuma has selected its pet of the week: Rocky, the 4-year-old male pit bull terrier. The Humane Society chose Rocky as this week's pet of the week because he has been in the shelter since last November and is still in need of his forever home. He is best suited in a home with older children and gets along great with other dogs, but doesn't do well with cats. If you want to give Rocky or another animal a good home, visit the Humane Society of Yuma located at 4050 S. Avenue 4 1/2 E, or call (928) 782-1621. (KYMA)
