🌱 Yuma Sector K-9 Uncovers Migrant Group + Roundtable On CO River

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Yuma.

Morning, Yuma! It's Friday, so let's get you started with everything you need to know going on in town today.

First, today's weather:

Plenty of sunshine. High: 91 Low: 58.

Here are the top three stories in Yuma today:

  1. The U.S. Border Patrol Yuma Sector successfully uncovered a group of migrants in the desert south of Yuma. K-9 Bena and her handler, BORSTAR Agent J. Moreno, discovered the group by sniffing them out. Migrants will sometimes use sand-colored sheets to camouflage themselves amidst the sand dunes, which is why the department uses K-9 units. After locating the group, agent Moreno arrested the group and transported them to Yuma Station for processing. (KYMA)
  2. Local leaders held a roundtable in Yuma yesterday, Apr. 28, to discuss the Colorado River's needs and shortages. State Rep. Brian Fernandez and Yuma County Supervisor Martín Porchas highlighted bills moving through Congress to address drought and water shortages. For the first time, Arizona is taking a mandatory cut in Colorado River supply, as the river's output dwindles and severe drought persists throughout the region. (Fronteras)
  3. Next week is First Friday in Historic Downtown Yuma! On May 6, participating businesses, located on Main Street, Madison Avenue, and Maiden Lane will have extended hours or offer specials and discounts throughout the day to encourage shoppers to #ShopLocal. If you're planning a night out next Friday, be sure to pass through Downtown and support the local business community! (City of Yuma Instagram)

  • The Humane Society of Yuma's Rescue Team was able to send a whopping 69 animals to rescue partners yesterday, getting them out of foster care or shelters and to their new homes! However, the Humane Society is still full and encourages the community to consider adopting or fostering one of the available animals. (Facebook)
  • Don't miss out on an evening of fine art and community gathering at the North End Artists' Co-Operative Spring Showcase, happening tomorrow (Apr. 30) from 5 to 9 p.m. at the United Building in Historic Downtown Yuma.
