Here are the top stories today in Bentonville:
- Bentonville School District officials anticipate asking voters for a millage increase in about six years to finance facility needs. The purpose of the increase would be to pay for the construction of a third high school, a fifth junior high school, and a 15th elementary, said Janet Schwanhausser, deputy superintendent and chief financial officer for the district. The plan lays out what schools should be built and when based on the assumption the district's enrollment, now at 18,550 students in grades K-12, will increase 3.5% every year. (Arkansas Online)
- A lane closure in Bentonville between SW 2nd Street and SW 3rd Street that began on Monday will last through Wednesday, Oct. 27. to allow for equipment removal. Weather or other unforeseen circumstances could postpone this closure. The street is scheduled as a one-lane flagging work zone. (The City of Bentonville)
- Maverick, a male border collie, is being used to drive geese away from the Bentonville Municipal Airport. The city bought Maverick from Flyaway Geese, a North Carolina company that trains border collies to disperse geese and other birds. The dogs are used at airports, city parks, golf courses, and military bases to help manage geese, pigeons, wading birds, starlings, seagulls, ducks, cormorants, and coot. The name "Maverick" was selected from more than 300 entries the city received through Facebook and email in March. (Arkansas Online)
