📰 News we're reading

1. UAFS College of Art and Design to present 'Glyphosate Dreams' (rivervalleydemocratgazette.com) — Fort Smith art lovers can explore "Glyphosate Dreams," a new solo exhibition opening Friday at UAFS's Windgate Art & Design Gallery and running through Nov. 20. The show, created during residencies including one at UAFS, uses photography, printmaking, and video to examine the herbicide glyphosate's impact on bodies, land, and water through chemically altered images and documents.

2. University of Arkansas at Fort Smith Army ROTC to hold annual Sept. 11 stair climb Friday (nwaonline.com) — Fort Smith residents are invited to join the UAFS Army ROTC's annual Sept. 11 stair climb at the Stubblefield Center this Friday at 6 a.m. Open to campus and community, the 110-flight climb honors lives lost in the 2001 attacks and encourages participants, including local first responders, to remember together while building national unity and resilience.

3. Former Fort Smith Southside High School principal, mayoral candidate Wayne Haver dies (nwahomepage.com) — Fort Smith is mourning longtime Southside High School principal and former mayoral candidate Wayne Haver, whose family announced his death Sunday. Haver led Southside for 36 years, and tributes from school leaders, alumni, and Rep. Steve Womack highlight his deep influence on generations of local students and the broader community.

4. Gas prices remain high for Labor Day weekend, could set record (4029tv.com) — Drivers in Fort Smith are paying an average of $3.75 per gallon for regular gas this Labor Day weekend, unchanged from last week but nearly a dollar higher than a year ago. AAA says Arkansas prices, driven up partly by tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, could set a holiday record even though the state still ranks among the cheapest for fuel nationally.

5. Arkansas cities are ditching Flock cameras, but some businesses are still using them (5newsonline.com) — Fort Smith shoppers at Lowe's should know the store is using automated license plate reader cameras in its parking areas, part of a broader rollout at locations across Arkansas. While many cities are canceling Flock Safety contracts over privacy concerns, state law still allows private businesses to operate these cameras, with data kept for up to 60 days and shared in limited circumstances.
