1. Fort Smith board to revisit two contracts after questions raised (swtimes.com) — Fort Smith's Board of Directors meets Tuesday to decide on key water and sewer contracts, including lagoon cleanouts at Lake Fort Smith and Lee Creek plants and new grit conveyors for the Massard facility, which affect local water reliability. Directors will also weigh a $300,000 land deal for a major sewer project, an $871,084 consent decree payment, a 2026 financial audit contract, and a cybersecurity update.
2. Election 2026: Cunningham calls for trust, long-term solutions (swtimes.com) — Fort Smith voters are hearing from Quinton Cunningham, who is running citywide for the Position 5 at-large seat on the Board of Directors and emphasizing trust, transparency, and long-term thinking. He outlines priorities on homelessness, animal welfare, and open government, and urges residents to stay engaged regardless of whether the city changes its form of government. Cunningham says he wants Fort Smith's growth to preserve affordability and support local businesses.
3. Methodist Village to open new intergenerational daycare (nwahomepage.com) — Fort Smith families will soon have a new childcare option as Methodist Village Senior Living prepares to open The Village Early Learning Center in January, blending daycare with daily interaction from local seniors. The $2.2 million renovation will create space for 136 children from infancy to age 5, with elders volunteering in music, art, gardening, and storytelling. Parents can already learn more and start planning enrollment online.
4. Sixth annual Golfing for Kids tournament, hosted by Family Ministries Foster Care, returns Oct. 5 (rivervalleydemocratgazette.com) — Fort Smith residents can support foster children across Arkansas at the sixth annual Golfing for Kids tournament on October 5 at Hardscrabble Country Club. Hosted by Fort Smith-based Family Ministries Foster Care, the four-person scramble raises money to recruit and support foster families, with morning and afternoon flights, lunch, prizes, and a shot at a new Chevy truck. Teams and individuals can still register online or by contacting organizers.
5. Local Youth Conservation Corps Members Build Skills While Preserving Fort Smith National Historic Site (nps.gov) — Local teens spent their summer working at Fort Smith National Historic Site, learning hands-on skills while helping repair historic walls, refurbish the gallows, and maintain wagons, cannons, and the old commissary. Through the Youth Conservation Corps program, they gained experience in trades like carpentry, plumbing, and equipment maintenance while exploring potential federal careers with the National Park Service.
